What You Need To Know

Going to your first gynecologist appointment may give you butterflies, but starting a habit that provides a foundation for a lifetime of health is one of the best steps a young woman can take.

Women should start receiving annual gynecology exams between 18 and 21 or when they become sexually active. However, you should schedule an exam sooner if you are experiencing any gynecological symptoms. Such symptoms include irregularities in the menstrual cycle, unusual or severe vaginal or pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, swelling, tenderness, sores, lumps, itching, or unusual changes in the breast.

At Lander Medical Clinic & Western Family Care, we want you to have a great first experience. Therefore, when making your first appointment, it is helpful to tell us that this is your first gynecological exam. Your health care provider knows that many women feel nervous about gynecology exams, which will help you relax and understand the process.

Your first appointment will include a discussion with the nurse and the doctor about your health and any concerns you might have. This is a good time for you to ask them what to expect from the exams – the physical exam and, if you agree to it and need it, the pelvic and vaginal exam. As part of your exam, you will be asked questions about your family history, current health, and sexual activity. You can also be asked questions about your menstrual cycle, sexual activity and partners, contraception, STD prevention, pregnancies, illnesses, surgeries, and drug and alcohol use.

Some of these questions will be quite personal in nature, but it is vital that you answer honestly. Do not let shyness be a health risk. You should have complete confidence that what you say is kept confidential.

Your gynecological exam is also a time for you to ask any questions that you may have. There are no wrong questions regarding your health; the more knowledge you have about your body, the more confidence you can have about taking care of it.

Our Gynecology and Obstetric Team wants you to feel comfortable choosing the right Provider and confident in your care. If you have any questions about what to expect at a gynecological exam or would like to schedule your annual Well Woman’s Exam, please call Lander Medical Clinic or Western Family Care at (307) 332-2941 for an appointment.
